When I was younger, I thought Kalamazoo was some made-up place that people used as a reference to measure some far-flung destination — like Timbuktu (which, by the way, is also real). As I grew up, I realized—wait, Kalamazoo does exist! I partnered with Discovered Kalamazoo and discovered that it’s a pretty incredible place that doesn’t get enough recognition. If I had to give three words to describe the midwest city affectionately known as Kzoo, they would be community, culture, and [exquisite] cuisine.
Planning a trip to Kalamazoo? There is tons to see and do from exploring downtown attractions to enjoying lively local festivals and uncovering unique local spots. Whether you’re interested in visiting museums, tasting craft brews, or immersing yourself in nature, Kalamazoo offers a diverse range of activities for every type of traveler.

How to get to Kalamazoo, Michigan
Getting to Kalamazoo, Michigan is easy whether you’re driving or flying. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Chicago and just over 2 hours from Detroit. For those flying, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) offers direct flights from several major cities. We actually flew in from Houston on a direct flight to Grand Rapids, which is about an hour’s drive from Kalamazoo. Alternatively, some flights from Houston land directly in Kalamazoo, saving you drive time. However, we rented a car and didn’t mind the short drive. With its central location and multiple travel options, Kalamazoo is easy to reach from nearby urban hubs.

When staying in Kalamazoo, the Radisson Plaza Hotel is an excellent choice. We couldn’t have chosen a better location for our stay! Its prime location makes it super easy to explore the city’s downtown attractions. The hotel offers spacious accommodations, including the luxurious King Suite. We loved coming back here to relax and recharge after a day of exploring! The dining options are also top-notch, with Brick and Brine, one of Kalamazoo’s premier restaurants, located within the hotel.
For alternative stays, consider the charming Kalamazoo House Bed and Breakfast, the historic Stuart Avenue Inn, or Home2 Suites by Hilton, which offers modern comforts. Each provides a unique way to experience the city.
Things to do in Kalamazoo
Known as a “Makers City,” Kalamazoo invites visitors to tap into their own creativity through hands-on experiences. Try your hand at making a custom candle at the Kalamazoo Candle Company (this is a quick and fun activity for people of all ages) or design your own fragrance at The Aroma Labs. If you’re feeling artistic, sip and paint at Colors & Cocktails, or dive into a glassblowing workshop at Glass Art Kalamazoo for a truly immersive experience.
Seasonal and free activities are endless in Kalamazoo. The annual Latinx Festival is a vibrant celebration of culture, while the Kalamazoo Balloon Fest brings magic to the skies. Be sure to get there early to get a good seat for the glow show! If you’re looking to explore the outdoors, rent a bike at Kzoo Swift and ride along the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.
Backyard Yogis offers community yoga classes that “foster well-being, and provide an equitable space for those most often left out of yoga”. We took an incredible yoga and reiki class that also served as a community drive for the Care Collective of SWMI — they provide barrier-free access to baby diapers, wipes, and menstrual products.
The city’s LGBTQ+ friendly vibe is reflected in events like those at OutFront Kalamazoo—we even attended an all-ages drag show that was both fun and inclusive.
Kalamazoo is also home to cultural gems like the Black Arts & Cultural Center, where you can explore the contributions of Black artists to the community, and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, which showcases a diverse array of exhibitions. Don’t miss the chance to visit the world-renowned Gilmore Car Museum. We didn’t expect to enjoy this museum as much as we did, but it was one of our favorite things to do in Kalamazoo. The Green Book exhibition particularly blew us away! The aviation-themed Air Zoo Museum is another can’t-miss activity for history lovers.
Support local initiatives by visiting the RAWK ‘N Shop (Read and Write Kalamazoo), which fosters creativity in youth and provides a hub for young entrepreneurs to sell their products. Stop by the local farmer’s market for fresh produce and handmade goods.
Kalamazoo is the perfect place for the culture-curious traveler, offering countless ways to engage with its rich artistic, historical, and community-focused spirit.
Best Places to eat in Kalamazoo
Breakfast Spots in Kalamazoo
Start your morning right at Crow’s Nest, a beloved local favorite. My recommendation? The Sailor’s Delight Potato Bowl—a hearty mix of scrambled eggs, cheese, veggies, and crispy potatoes that will keep you full and happy all day. If you don’t fancy breakfast foods as much, they have an all-day menu. Whatever you do, get the fries with a side of their red pepper aioli, you’ll thank me later. For a classic breakfast buffet experience, head to The Morning Dish, where you can enjoy a wide variety of morning staples, from eggs and bacon to pancakes and fresh fruit. If you’re more of a coffee person, Factory Coffee is the perfect place to kickstart your day with a rich, perfectly brewed cup. Pair it with a pastry, and you’re set.
Lunch & Dinner
I had very little to no expectations when it came to the culinary scene in Kalamazoo. Little did I know, it would quickly become one of my favorite foodie cities—I was absolutely blown away! From creative sushi rolls to fine dining and local favorites, Kalamazoo’s diverse food culture had me exploring new flavors and dishes at every turn. Whether you’re looking for an upscale meal or something casual, this city has incredible options. Here are my top lunch and dinner spots that you won’t want to miss.
My top choice is Maru Sushi & Grill, offering an elevated sushi experience. I highly recommend trying the Cosmo sushi roll, kimchi and rice, chicken gyozas, and the Bulgogi Donburi Bowl. Their Teriyaki Glazed Chicken is also a favorite, and don’t miss out on their seasonal crème brûlée—I had the matcha, and it was perfection.
For a more upscale vibe, Brick and Brine is a must. Their brussels sprouts are a perfect starter, and for mains, I loved the salmon with summer squash, grilled asparagus lentil hash, and lemon dill sauce, as well as the scallops served with corn and chorizo chowder, crispy potato, and haricot verts. Rustica is another favorite, offering rustic European-inspired dishes like the sautéed bay scallops and the pan-roasted Otto’s chicken breast.
If you’re in the mood for Latin-inspired flavors, Roca delivers, plus they have an amazing patio. Start with the chips and guac, then move on to the Pato Almendrado duck dish with zucchini, almond mole, cauliflower purée, and caper berries, or the flavorful hanger steak. Finally, 600 Kitchen and Bar is a great spot for casual fare—I highly recommend their crispy brussel sprouts and their hearty chicken chili. This chili was so delicious, that I ordered one to go!
Drinks & Libations
Kalamazoo is not only known for its great food but also for its lively bar scene, with Bell’s Brewery being one of its most famous local treasures—it’s where craft beer lovers come to enjoy some of the best brews in the country. Besides Bell’s, there are plenty of other great spots to check out. One Well Brewing offers a laid-back atmosphere with unique brews like their Sweet Water Street Stout, brewed with locally roasted coffee and donuts. Final Gravity Brewing Company is another must-visit, known for its variety of well-crafted beers.
But beyond breweries, there are plenty of other gems. Twine Urban Winery, a Black-owned tasting room, is popular for its boozy wine slushies and locally crafted wines. Do not visit Kalamazoo without having a nightcap at Dabney & Co. Cocktail Bar & Lounge, another Black-owned spot, that combines craft cocktails with live music. Don’t miss their signature cornbread dishes. I had the spiced maple chicken & cornbread and it is the best cornbread I’ve ever had! For a nostalgic experience, The Root Beer Stand is a Kalamazoo staple, serving up classic root beer floats and diner-style favorites.
Kalamazoo truly surprised me with its community-centricity, rich culture, and incredible cuisine. From the welcoming spirit of local businesses to the unique culinary experiences that celebrate diverse flavors, this city embodies a strong sense of togetherness. Kalamazoo has undoubtedly earned a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to return to explore even more of what it has to offer!
