Finally! Someone gave actual CONS besides the heat! I know you mentioned the heat, but no source has been honest about everything else you mentioned
I appreciate you being so real about living in Merida! I'm looking at possibly moving to Merida this upcoming winter. Fingers crossed

Bought a home in the North of the City...Heat is bad, but just get a dipping pool even a plastic kid one...When I went to look at properties I literally took a dip at the hotel "Poso" every 3 hours during the day and it kept me refreshed during the day.

Loved the city! You forgot to mention that the state is 90% rainforest, has 24,000 cenotes and that everyone is very polite, like going back to the 1930's...The museums, Cathedral, arts, Pyramids etc etc.

I move out there in September...Hope to meet ex-pats like you to enjoy a chilled tequila and a giant Mojito.

I live in Sodzil Norte, walking distance to the Harbor; lived here for 2 years, but in Mexico it is important that a foreigner learn and speak Spanish. Being a gringo from Los Angeles who has lived in a variety of countries, knowing the language is important and the people appreciate your attempts. Dress appropriately. My birthday party 2 years ago was interesting. Some 30 people: 2 Americans, 2 Canadians, the rest Mexicans.
Keep writing, well done!

Loved your story! It was funny yet very informative! With all the madness currently going on in the US, I'm considering my options and have come upon Merida as being a safe place to live. I'm Dominican (descendant of but born in NYC) and currently live in Georgia so I can relate to all your experiences above (these made me laugh so hard specially the mosquitoes, humidity and 'gringo' label). I'd love to learn a bit more from you as I'm growing antsy and just want peace of mind. Merida seems kind of similar to Dominican Republic in one way or another, therefore, I can see myself easily living there. Thanks again for your story!

Enjoyed it. I've been going to Merida and the surrounding area for 15 years. The heat from April to August is very rough. But , everyone is out early and later in the evening when it does cool down. El Colon, the sorbete place, has saved us on several occassions. It sounds like you really love it.

I moved to Mexico a year ago, in the middle of the pandemic. Most of the things mentioned in this article ring true, especially getting gringoed. I really WANT to support the local economy by buying in the segundas (thrift stores) and little markets, just like I did in the U.S. But nothing has a price tag, and they gouge on prices. For example, I wanted a single TV tray. It's $13 new at Walmart down the road (yes, there is a Walmart AND a Costco AND a Home Depot here in Ensenada). Same tray but banged up and stained was $15 at the "thrift" store. It makes me feel like I have to shop in the big box stores I didn't patronize in the U.S. just to stay within budget.

Import taxes can do you in. I ordered a $25 thermal blanket, and customs charged me $95 import tax!!! when my mail service picked it up and brought it across. If there is no invoice in the package, they decide on what it's worth. Now I email invoices to my mail service for anything I order in the states.

One thing that blind-sided me is that houses here have no central heat and no insulation. Windows are all single-pane. In winter, when it was 48 degrees F outside, it was 48 degrees in the house. My dog would sit under blankets shivering. I wore long underwear, layers, and my winter jacket indoors all the time. People use propane heaters in the house--with no venting. As someone who nearly died of carbon monoxide poisoning years ago from an improperly vented room heater, I can't bring myself to use one. This is winter #2. Wish me luck!

Something I really like are the stop lights. Green lights flash for a few seconds before they turn yellow. This really makes strategic driving easier.
